Things I Learned in January

  • Fillet mignon was one of the luxurious foods served on the first passenger commercial transatlantic flight.  Man, I love Fillet mignon.  I blame my parents:  they always served it wrapped up in bacon around the edges for Christmas Eve supper through my adolescent years.  Obviously, a person doesn’t have fillet mignon often, but when the opportunity presents itself (and I’m not necessarily the person funding the culinary affair) I pretty much seize it even though steak connoisseurs gape at me with aghast facial expressions when I request “well done.”
  • Some of the artwork uncovered in at the architectural site of Pompeii was actually sealed and locked away to protect the general public because it was deemed  incredibly offensive and promiscuous at the time it was discovered and was considered to endanger the morality of society.
  • A cat is perfectly capable of chewing through a strong plastic package to indulge in the entire bag of cat treats.  In fact, a cat will find a way to get up to the top of the refrigerator in the middle of the night to retrieve those cat treats, even if he has to swipe everything off the top of the appliance and onto the floor with a crash.
  • My geographical knowledge of southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands is terrible.  However, inspired by several books I have been reading, I have learned to identify several new places on a map this month.
  • I learned about the penal colonies that settled Australia.  How did I not know anything about this before?  Fascinating.
  • Although I’m definitely not able to play it like I want to, I learned two movements of a Beethoven piano Sonata this month, the first chunk of learning that creates the ability to make things fluent and add in details (which will be the task of February).

Oh wonderful! I can”t wait to hear it. I love Beethoven. I hope you will play it for me when I come next time. I promise you can pretend like you are practicing. I will even sit in the cabin room out of sight. :~)
