House Hunting
I’m typing from a hotel. We’re on a house hunting trip. My kids are swimming like fish in the tropical waterpark with Gramma Kathy. It’s nice to be at an indoor tropical waterpark for days on end when the temperature this morning was 20 below or worse! Other than leaving the hotel to look at houses, you can kind of forget the weather.
Actually, truth be told, I kind of like subzero weather if I don’t have to be outside for long stretches of time and my car is starting. (And it is). I like the way the snow crunches like styrofoam under your shoes. I like wearing extra thick socks and super fuzzy mittens and being happy about it. I like how the cold air cleans your nose out and makes your skin feel tingly. I like wearing layers and layers of clothes and big winter coats and flannel lined pants and a scarf over your face. I like how the wind can take your breath away unless you nuzzle your chin up inside the bottom of the hood of your coat. And I like how cold builds character. It makes you feel brave for just opening up the door and stepping outside, and it makes you thankful for the modern technology of indoor heating. I’m Nordic, a winter baby, and I like relishing in it this time of year.
To get out of the hotel while my husband was being fitted for labcoats this morning, Grandma and the kidlets and I bundled up and drove to the library. They cancelled school because of the cold and not many people were out and about. We had a wonderful time exploring the public library. The children’s section was great. They even had a brand new Thomas the Train set, which was ever so popular with my crew. There was a little bouncy chair for The Banana to hang out in, a wooden kitchen, and things to do galore. If it weren’t for needing to eat lunch, I think we might have stayed all day! I just LOVE libraries. And they’re free!
The funniest thing of all was that one of my husband’s meetings got cancelled, and he had some time to waste, so he decided to check out the library, not knowing that we were checking out the library. I was walking around and there he was! What can I say, geeks marry geeks. How terrific.
