What I Learned in August

  • After reading Ted Kooser’s poetry book “The Blizzard Voices,” which poetically chronicles some of the stories of the Schoolchildren’s Blizzard of 1888, I did more reading about this devastating and catastrophic weather event.  The stories are gripping.
  • Buttermilk pancakes with fresh peaches and whipped cream:  I learned that this is perhaps one of my favorite breakfast treats. I love peach season.
  • Strapping a big yellow kayak to your car and leaving it there for weeks makes it easy to see where you have parked at all times.  Your children will easily be able to identify your vehicle in a sea of automobiles that all sort of look alike.   Even the children of your friends can recognize your car driving down the street or parked at the grocery store.   At least we have the kayak ready to go  if we run into great water conditions.
  • It is a gift when some of your children are old enough to ride their bicycles around the neighborhood.  They have been loving the independence and interactions with friends, and have been super responsible about staying within the boundaries and arriving back home when they are supposed to.  Success!
