Kauai: Creatures I Came Across

This adorable  large snail was meandering across a sidewalk at our friends’ resort.  Dr. Peds actually came and found me and my camera.  Right after I snapped the pictures someone came along and accidentally kicked the snail.  It curled up in it’s shell and went flying.  We thought we’d be kind and put it on the side of the sidewalk away from foot traffic, but someone who worked at the resort saw us and came over to tell us what a terrible pest snails were.  Still, I love snails.  I loved meeting his one.  Thesee strange creatures I found one evening when Dr. Peds and I took a walk on a beach on the north shore of the island.  They were next to an area with a lot of reefs, and I think they were just hanging out in the sand until the next tide came in.  Our rental place was next to an inlet that went out to the ocean.  Every morning and evening  we could sit out on our patio and look down and see 10-15 enormous sea turtles meandering around.  They came in at night to sleep in the inlet and they’d swim out in the morning.  They were incredible.  If you didn’t look carefully you’d miss them because they were perfectly camouflaged like enormous rocks.  Sometimes they would haul themselves out of the water to sun on the dark rocks.

Also spotted:  two geckos, 10,000 chickens, a pod of dolphins, and a terrified dog stuck on a cliff
