He Reads

This kidlet had a huge stash of gift cards to use at Barnes and Nobles from his birthday and Christmas, and I’m not sure what else.  He has been asking and asking for a special trip to the bookstore, just me and him, and unfortunately, I was about 100 days overdue in actually making that request a reality.  Every time I would think it would work for us to sneak off on a day Dr. Peds wasn’t working, something crazy came up and we didn’t get to go.  Last Saturday the stars aligned and we drove off to the retail district.

Shopping with this fellow is always interesting.  Unlike his sisters who deliberate about their choices for literally hours, this one knows what he wants and goes straight for it.  In no time flat he had picked out an ENORMOUS stack of books to purchase, and then, because I wasn’t finished looking around the store yet, he huddled in a corner on the floor and started reading a number of other books on the shelves in the kids section.  He’s never in a rush to leave the bookstore, but he’s also super deliberate about what he’s going to get.

Here’s what I love best about this prolific reader of mine:   when he reads, he is completely and utterly engrossed in the story, like me.  And like me, he really can’t stop reading in the middle of the story without feeling really, really frustrated.  The best part of all, is that he will just burst out in peals of genuine laughter when something is funny in his book.  On the drive home he started reading one of his books and after about three minutes in the car,  he started laughing so hard it made me start laughing.  It’s so funny to hear someone just crack up  and laugh so much out of the blue, in pure silence.  I remember laughing like that when I would read books when I was his age too.
