What I Learned in March

  • Hearing a piece of music at a concert inspired me to learn about Coventry Cathedral in England.  It has a fascinating history.
  • Before my choir’s requiem concert earlier this week there was special lecture given by a guest choral expert about the history of requiems.  It was really interesting to learn about the history of the requiem music, how it influenced musical history and was influenced by the changes in music throughout history.  I felt so much smarter after I left, even though the lecture was just a brief overlook.
  • In this month that was crazy busy, jam packed with so many concerts and activities, I learned that a week can pass so very quickly, yet feel like it’s going so very slowly when you think about all the things you are going to pack into one measly day.  At the end of the week it seems like forever since the last week, but the weeks fly by so incredibly fast.
  • I learned some new photo editing techniques for color processing.
  • There was a lot of fierce debate in our household this month about how to pronounce the word “perpetuity.”  After consulting a lot of dictionaries it was decided that I had been pronouncing it wrong in my head.  The right way sounds incredibly wrong to my ear though, and I tried to convince the rest of the household to just come on board and pronounce it my way.  I don’t think I’m winning.
  • At the piano I am learning a Chopin waltz and a Bach fugue.
  • At the cello I am learning the rest of the Romberg Sonata that I’ve been working with for awhile.  I’m also working on getting better at sixth and seventh and thumb position, along with that elusive vibrato that is so slowly improving.
  • I picked up the book Duluth’s Historic Parks at the bookstore, and from reading just half of it, I learned so many fascinating things about how my favorite places in Duluth came to be, and how they’ve changed throughout time.  It was a really fun read for me.
