What I Learned in July

  • Leaving to go anywhere with almost 20 extended family members all together takes time.  A lot of time.  Way more time than you think it would take, even when you tell yourself to leave a lot of extra time!  It’s best to just embrace it!
  • I’m learning to play with better vibrato on my cello.  It’s such a slow process for me!  I also learned several etudes this month.
  • At the piano I started to learn “The Hut on Hen’s Legs:  Baba Yaga.”  I love sinister sounding music.  This has always been on of my favorite pieces of music to listen to, both the orchestra version and the original piano music.
  • Becoming a rugologist (someone who studies and replicates valuable rugs) is actually a career path.  There are so many jobs in the world one just doesn’t ever think of, right?
  • When you forget to bring socks and  your feet are getting bit up by mosquitos, but you just don’t want to leave the beach because its SUMMER (!), it works great to wrap your legs and ankles in a couple of beach towels to keep those buzzing pests at bay until you just can’t stand it any longer.
  • Sometimes your introvert children just need a little space to call their own, and they become quite a bit happier.
  • I already knew that I was a person who didn’t handle heat well, but this month I relearned that I just don’t function well mentally when the thermometer rises above 80 degrees.  It’s best just to give myself a little room to slow down when the temperature goes up.  (Today, the first day of August, it’s 56 degrees and foggy, and I’m personally celebrating!)  It doesn’t even get very hot very often here in Northern Minnesota next to the big Lake, but even 80 degrees can feel really hot to those of us who live here.
