Forest Friday: Beavers

This Friday we walked to the beaver dam late in the day, knowing that the beavers would be most likely to come out right around sunset. We suspected they might make an appearance to repair a large hole in one of the beaver dams that came about from rushing spring snowmelt. The beavers did not disappoint! When we were right next to the pond, it was a little early and they were nowhere to be seen. However, on our way back around the loop, we sat down on the hill above the pond to do some Forest Friday work, and sure enough if they didn’t appear right as the sun sunk! They were definitely busy moving sticks and logs, and even climbing out of the water to move things around on the dam. Mr. TOF was very excited to get to see them because up until now he’s only heard tales of other people in the family who have been at the right place at the right time. It is so fun to watch the beavers stealthily swimming around so silently. They are amazing creatures. It constantly surprises me how they can change the landscape of their environment and take down gigantic trees.
