Oregano
Every spring I plant a mixture of flowers and herbs in containers on my back deck. I enjoy watching them grow and sitting among them all summer season, and I’m always a little sad when frost comes in the fall. Usually they look their best right before the cold strikes. My favorite herbs include rosemary and lavender, which I winter inside from year to year, as well as lime thyme, lemon balm (both smell so wonderful!) mint, basil, and oregano. I love to bake bread with rosemary and oregano, and I also love potatoes with oregano sprinkled on top.
We didn’t use as many herbs as normal this summer because it was just such a weird and crazy season for the whole family, and especially for me. This meant that one of my oregano pots — I usually plant two — wasn’t really even touched all, and near the end of August it started sprouting all sorts of delicate little purple flowers. They were so pretty! It makes me think that next year I should plant a pot of oregano just for the flowers, which were every bit as enjoyable as any flowers I actually planted to be flowers.
