Rowing Scrimmage

Last Saturday The Banana rowed in a team scrimmage, and Peanut Maximus and I headed down to watch. Watching went much better than I expected. Peanut Maximus was in the stroller for several hours, but he was pretty entertained by boats going into the water and boats coming out of the water, lots of people watching, and grabbing leaves from the weeds on the pier to hold in his hand.

Mr. TOF was off to Iowa to play baseball, so he sadly missed the scrimmage.

This is the first time the scrimmage has happened since I have had rowers rowing because they were unable to go to one of the traveling regattas that they usually attend, but the scrimmage was terrific because it got rowers of all levels out on the water in a competitive way early in the season, and there was quite a lot of even and exciting competition. Sometimes junior boats were racing masters boats. Sometimes junior female boats were racing male boats, and let me tell you, those girls gave the boys a run for their money, even winning some of the races! I overhead some boys talking about feeling a little terrified to race against one of The Banana’s female boats, which made me smile, because she loves racing against boys and winning. (And they did!)

The Banana enjoyed being in a mixed 8 that raced a mixed 8 of adults that included most of the coaches and assistant coaches.

The water was calm and lovely. The fog rolled in a few times but not enough to actually disrupt the itinerary, and I think everyone looked like they were having a really fun time.
