Breakfast

There was no school today, which means that after I got up and fed the baby, we crawled back in my bed for some snuggles, and before long he was dozing peacefully next to me and I was in the middle of a really good book.  That’s when the other kidlets decided they were hungry.  “Mama, what’s for breakfast?”  I told them to pour some cereal and enjoy themselves.  I was not in the mood to get out of bed for breakfast on a rare morning when I can snuggle my baby and read a book.

Before long The Banana was back in my room, telling me in a super excited voice that they didn’t really like regular cereal, but they would really like to make a cereal mixture.  “Oh, alright,”  I said.  “Just clean up your mess and don’t waste the cereal.”  She bounced out of the bedroom.  After all, I reasoned how much mess could they really make?  And even if it were a big mess, it would be worth it to just STAY IN BED with a BOOK.  (And truth be told, in the end there really wasn’t a mess at all).

Quite a bit of time went by, several chapters of my book.  Then The Banana and Mr. Sneaky Pants were back in my room, eyes twinkling with excitement, telling me that they had made breakfast for ME too!  And that YaYa had some great ideas!  They were positively bouncing around the room, and by that time the baby was awake too, so I purposefully closed my (very good) book and brought the baby down.  On the table were four place settings of “Mouse Breakfast.”

“It’s just like a restaurant, Mom!”  YaYa purposefully tromped around filling up glasses with apple juice.  She orchestrated the meal, directing Mr. SP and The Banana in all the tasks necessary to cook toast and make a face on it with cereal, butter and a chocolate chip (it was cold when we actually got around to eating it, but clearly no one minded that).  Each person had an interesting bowl of cereal mixture , and there was a tasty bowl of “kid yogurt” (as in vanilla yogurt, not Mama’s plain yogurt).  I cannot tell you how happy the kidlets were to eat breakfast.  It was very creative, and done so nicely, with hardly any mess to clean up at all.  I was impressed.  Very impressed.
