At Piano Lessons
In the middle of my teaching day on Tuesdays I have a sweet and adorable kindergartener who comes to piano lessons. She is a ball of energy with approximately two million ideas and nearly as many opinions about things. She keeps things very lively and is doing great at piano. She wears eyeglasses and likes to move around a lot at her lessons.
Student: Where are your eyeglasses today?
Me: Well, I’m not sure.
Student: Well, I really think you need to find them and wear them.
Me: Hmm. Well, as soon as I find them I’ll make sure to put them on.
Student: You really should be more careful about loosing your glasses.
Me: You are right.
Student: And are you aware, actually, that your teeth have quite a bit of yellow on them?
Me: Well, I guess they probably do. That happens sometimes when you get older. Your teeth get a little bit more yellow.
Student: Your teeth are REALLY yellow.
The Student’s Mortified Mother (who was watching the piano lesson and is now holding her head in her hands): Honey, everyone’s teeth have a bit of yellow in them. Mine do. Even yours do.
Student: Well, my teeth aren’t very yellow. (student looks at me) They are really not as yellow as your teeth.
Me: I think you’re right. How about tapping out this rhythm?
I am telling you, I have the most fun job in the ENTIRE world. Who else has conversations like this? It’s a riot! And maybe I’ll make an appointment with my dentist in the near future, although I prefer to think of my tooth color as an off-white creamy tone.
