My Ballet Companion

The best thing about being a Mama to two girls, is that I will have companions to take with me to the ballet for several years.  I love going to the ballet.  My husband took me the first time, to the Nutcracker for my birthday while he was in medical school.  Once was enough for him, even though I loved it.  When Sarah was four, I took her to her first ballet, another production of the Nutcracker, and she was hooked.  Completely hooked.

Last night she and I were very excited to attend the Minnesota Ballet's production of Cinderella.  We both thought it was splendid.  It was fun to know the story so well.   The production included only the professional dancers in the company, and they were completely amazing.  The dancing was mesmerizing, particularly the ball scene.  The stepsisters were actually danced by men, a farce.  They were completely hilarious, and so the night held dainty and athletic dancing executed with precision, great classical music, and many, many giggles.

Sarah was particularly entranced with the design of the set and the special fabric painted curtain. That's my art-loving girl.  She's always noticing artistic details.  She mentioned that she wished they were making a movie of the ballet so she could watch it whenever she wanted to.

The Banana was very, very put out when she saw Sarah and I dressing up to go out to the ballet.  The tutu toddler knew exactly where we were going, and was heartbroken that she wasn't coming along.  Oh, the tears.  Soon, my dear. Soon you'll be big enough to sit and watch a real ballet too.  And I'll definitely be taking you.
