The Tortured Crayfish
While my nieces were visiting, we tromped down one of my favorite hiking trails. As the last waterfall cascades down the craggely rock, there is a shallow pool. It didn't the exploring crew long to discover a crayfish scooting along the broken rocks under the water. They called my brother-in-law Bryan over and to their delight, he chased it along with a stick, until it came right to the edge of the water, where after some hesitation he plucked it out with his fingers.
The crayfish was not so excited about dangling upside down four and a half feet above the ground, so my kind brother-in-law set it on a nice thick stick. All of the kids gathered around, their noses right up to the stick to get up close and personal.
And then the poor crayfish lost its balance and tumbled down to the ground, a sudden jerky action that caused all five kids to shriek at the top of their lungs and jump three feet backwards, tumbling into one another. It was one of those moments when I wished my camera was recording sound.
