Old School
In this day of technological wonder, I am glad that our library still has this wonderful telephone booth out for kids to play with. It has been such a hit with all of my kidlets, and Mr. Trouble on Two Feet is no exception. He recently discovered it, standing there, across the way from the train table, and he is just thrilled with the opportunity to push buttons to dial and say his favorite (and nearly only) word: “Hi!” twenty five times within sixty seconds. It tickles him to no end. Not only is the telephone a great stimulator of pretend play and verbalization for little people, but it also opens up great conversation opportunities when your big kids ask, “Why would you need to have a telephone in a glass box anyway?”
The only time I have ever really used a telephone booth was when I spent time at International Music Camp. There used to be three telephone booths outside the cafeteria for campers to call home. They were red with sliding doors. You had to stand in line for forever to use the phones because there were easily five hundred campers each week, and they all wanted to use the phone during their free time. But I have very vivid memories of calling my Mama and telling her how much fun I was having each summer.
