The Free Spirit Self-Stylist

We’ve recently discovered the Fancy Nancy books. I don’t know how we managed to miss them for so long! They’ve been quite inspiring for Miss Sarah, who is very into accessories and creative clothing choices. And they’ve been a good reminder to me to chill out about the clothing choices Miss Sarah comes up with and just let her be. It’s hard, though, when she comes out of her room with a long sleeve shirt underneath a summer dress with winter knit tights, all of the previous in four different kinds of stripes in different colors that travel different directions. I want to shout! “No! You don’t match!” and help her choose something different . . . which usually results in emotional trauma for the both of us (and admitedly, some days I give into my impulse and redress her, but I’m getting better all the time about it). But then I think of Fancy Nancy’s parents, and use them as my role model.

Fancy Nancy is all about accessories, of course, and so Miss Sarah decided to do her own hair for school with these lovely barrettes. As you might have guessed, she clipped them in herself, because it’s no fun to be Fancy Nancy if your mom has to help.
