What I Learned in December

  • An astounding number of casualties in the United States armed services during World War II were the result of simple accidents:  in training, in combat, from equipment failure or lack of careful planning.
  • I learned to beware of the plow grade at the end of my driveway.  It’s large.  And evil.
  • It actually takes more than a half hour to defrost the van windshield when the outside temperature is negative twenty.
  • There are 5 inches of asphalt between the rumble strip in the center of Minnesota Highway 210 and the yellow no passing lines on either side of it.  (We happened to have a yardstick from the 1980’s in our car while traveling and stopped to measure).
  • There are 15 inches of asphalt between the rumble strip on the side of the road and the white lane line that indicates the start of the shoulder of the road on Minnesota Highway 210.
  • I always wondered what Boxing Day (December 26) was all about.  It turns out that it’s a day of blessing public service workers in Great Britain.  It’s a day give gifts to the postal workers and others, and it’s also a day where children “go begging from door to door,” carrying wreaths, hoping for treats., kind of like Halloween.

LOL – my boys asked what it was and I punched one in the arm – and said it was for boxing – then I showed them my boxing moves I learned while watching The Bells of St. Mary over Christmas! LOL Luckily, they were smart enough not to believe me and didn’t start a boxing match. I guess they’re kind of growing up! Wishing you a blessed New Year where you learn all kinds of awesome, encouraging things!
