2014 Cougar Chase Race

Even though it wasn’t supposed to rain until afternoon on Saturday, the day of the Cougar Chase, thunder woke me up at 4:30, and the steady stream of drizzle and various levels of heavy rain did not let up.  I had volunteered to help at the registration table, and since YaYa was out of the 5K this year because she had injured her foot a few weeks ago and was not supposed to run on it yet, I left the house early and alone.  Dr. Peds brought the rest of the crew later, looking a bit frazzled.

Mr. TOF had been looking forward to the race for months, but there was NO WAY he was running in the rain.  He came clad in every piece of rain gear he could find.  The boy does not like getting wet and muddy.  No amount of convincing could get him to join the race.

Despite the rain and pervasive mud, so many people DID run the races, and ran fast and well.  Runners never cease to amaze me.  They are so dedicated.

Soon it was time for the 1K race.  We didn’t practice very much this year, but both the super fast Banana and the somewhat reluctant runner, Mr. SP, had great races and came in second in their age division.  Mr. SP was not excited about running at all this year, so the serendipitous awarding of a silver medal was kind of a big deal around here.  His favorite race moment:  planning a big splash as his feet landed in an extra large mud puddle while passing the cougar mascot.

After the race I transported YaYa and Mr. SP home.  Dr. Peds stopped off at the grocery store with Mr. SP and The Banana.  While they were picking up a few things that we needed, he told them that since they did such a great job running in the rain, they could pick out any kind of snack item they wanted as long as it was less than five dollars.

Mr. SP took full advantage of the opportunity and picked out two things we would never otherwise buy him:  Lucky Charms cereal and a bottle of Dr. Pepper.  He shared the cereal with his siblings the next morning at breakfast.  I had to cut people off after their third full bowl of Lucky Charms.

The Banana picked an extra large bottle of blue Powerade and a watermelon, which we ate for supper that night.
