Never Have I Ever

  • Never have I ever played the tuba.  It’s such an interesting instrument, but I’m not sure its an instrument I will ever sit down to actually learn to play.  I appreciate tuba players very much, though.
  • Never have I ever held a snake. Nor do I want to.  Snakes terrify me.
  • Never have I ever started a campfire on my own.  Fire also scares me, although I enjoy sitting around a camp fire someone else has started, particularly if there are no young children around who worry me about falling into the campfire.
  • Never have I ever enjoyed doing laundry.  It just isn’t my thing.  It never has been.  My mother first made me start doing my laundry because my room was a disaster and I wasn’t putting dirty clothes into the laundry, or putting my laundry away.  Laundry has always felt like a lifelong punishment.  I minimalize laundry as much as I possibly can around here.  I wash and dry things, and sort it into baskets for other people to fold and put away.  They don’t fold and put it away either, though, so it all just gets shoved in a drawer in a mismatched fashion.  And I’m pretty much OK with that.  Possibly from my dislike of laundry tasks comes my ambivalence about nice clothes.  We’re a scruffy bunch here, with a lot of mismatched socks.
  • Never have I ever made my own pottery.  I’d love to take a pottery class and learn how to run a pottery wheel and fire the pottery in the kiln.  Plus I love making big goopy messes.
  • Never have I ever cooked with onions on purpose.  Garlic either.  I really wish I were allergic to onions and garlic.  In fact, it would be nice if most people were allergic to onions and garlic.  I strongly dislike onions and garlic.  They seem to make a lot of other people very happy, though.
  • Never have I ever swam in the ocean, although that might change soon!
  • Never have I ever sung Handel’s Messiah in its entirety, although I would love to be involved in a full production of that wonderful oratorio.
  • Never have I ever written a novel.  I’d like to be disciplined enough to do that someday.  There are a lot of stories in my head.  It’s hard to be focused enough to get them onto paper, and a novel seems like such an intimidating project!  People do write novels all the time though, and I think it just comes with daily discipline.  Someday I hopefully will make time for this.
  • Never have I ever changed a flat tire on a car.  My dad once started to teach me how to change a flat tire before I left for college, but after five minutes, he looked at me and said, “You know, maybe it would be better if you just called me if you need help.”  I’m pretty useless with tools, and my college was only an hour away from home.  I was grateful that my Dad was willing to come to my rescue.   By the time I was done with college I was married, and then my husband was charged with the task of tire changing.
