The Cousins Visit the Art Institute

We were thrilled that the cousins, their parents, and Grandma Kathy came to spend the weekend with us!  It was a weekend jam packed  because the missions conference was taking place at church, Arrowhead Chorale rehearsals were proceeding as usual, Dr. Peds had to work one night,  and YaYa had a case of the stomach flu.  Still, we found lots of ways to have a lot of fun, playing outside in the yard, and heading over to Family Art Day at the Art Institute.  It was a terrific way to spend the middle of the day on Saturday:  painting, using permanent markers to color on old CDs, gluing junk together, creating all sorts of things with yarn and beads, and perhaps best of all:  using the pottery wheel.

I was so HAPPY when I looked over and realized that Grandma Kathy was teaching The Banana to braid!  I learned how to braid exactly like this, with three different colored strands of yarn on vacation with my Grandma Edna.  Grandma Edna always sat next to me in the van, and she had a magic purse and a magic knitting bag that was filled to the brim with things for me to do in the car.  While she was crocheting an afghan for one of my cousins, she gave me three pieces of yarn to braid.  I’d braid them and unbraid them and braid them again.  It kept me busy for long stretches of highway driving, the perfect thing for a grandma to do with a kid.

Cousin Katherine made some awesome anklets. I loved watching her use the pottery wheel.
