What I Learned in June

  • Lemongrass Essential oil actually really does work as a bug repellant.  It also smells nice.
  • I already knew that you often learn important lessons when you are  suffering.  You can also learn important lessons from watching other people suffer through choices that may not have always been the best.
  • In my cello adventures, I learned about how harmonics work, more about bow distribution, and I’m working on a ton of issues regarding bow control and tension.  Oh the tension.  Sigh.  I learned all the rest of the music in Book 2, although I have a lot of tweaking to do still.  I’m beginning to learn vibrato. I also learned that pulling out my cello and randomly playing for others because they are curious about the instrument results in catastrophe!  If I don’t warm up right and if I’m sitting in a different chair than my usual chair, everything turns disastrous fast.  Normally when I practice I block out an hour and a half of time at least, because I know that the first half hour will be pretty much just the process of warming up, and the real work comes after that. I should have expected a disaster, and I did expect my playing to be not as great, but let me tell you, both times I tried to impress my brother with the cello, I completely and utterly failed.  Not that he would have been impressed in the first place.  He’s never ever enjoyed listening to me practice anything.
  • In conclusion, I learned that playing the cello is a GREAT way to torture your brother.  I’m so happy I can come up with new ways to bother him even though I”m middle aged and he’s practically middle aged.
  • I love the combination of basil and fresh mozzarella.
  • Naps in a hammock are wonderful naps.
  • Reading some great pedagogy articles in the last few days has inspired me to try some new things in my teaching, especially  relating to the importance of fostering musical creativity in my students.

Yes, the cello is a wonderful way to annoy a brother. 🙂 I appreciated the one about suffering, that is very true. Thanks for sharing!
