Last Week’s Saturday Hike: Toppled Trees

Almost all of the trees  in people’s yards and along city boulevards that were topped in our huge summer thunderstorm last July are now cleaned up, and most of the trails are cleared in the forests as well.  Still, while hiking along, there are just so many trees that have toppled.  Big trees.  Healthy trees.  Sometimes one tree topped and took a bunch of others with it.  Often there are huge root balls sticking in the air.  It’s amazing how powerful wind can be.

This lovely giant red pine was along a snowmobile trail, and even served as a trail marker.  The kidlets thought the downed sign was kind of ironic.
