Swim Team

Before Christmas Mr. SP approached us and asked what we thought about him joining the swim team at middle school.  “Absolutely!  Great idea!” we said and filled out all the paperwork.

The swim team at middle school is an inclusive group for kids who haven’t had experience with competitive swimming and kids who might have spent years swimming for private swim teams.  Practice started when school began again in January, and we are super excited that our most introverted kid who doesn’t enjoy sports teams and running has found something that he likes doing.  We don’t care how fast he is; we just think it’s great that he goes to swimming practice three days a week.  Two days are after school, and there is one early morning practice on Wednesday morning.

I always thought one of my kids might like to be on a swim team someday, and what do you know . . . it happened.  There are a lot of things I like about the sport of swimming that I have always thought it would be a good fit for my kids, in particular, the aspect of being part of a team but mainly competing against yourself and improving what you can do.

I’m super grateful for the swim coaches at middle school who encourage all sorts of kids to participate regardless of stellar abilities.  That isn’t the case with many sports and activities at middle school, and it makes me so happy.
