What I Learned in May

  • On the cello I learned several etudes, and I am learning to be patient as I slowly put together some pieces that are a bit challenging for me section by section.
  • At the piano I learned a piece by Debussy, an accompaniment for a student, and another for The Banana. It was a slow piano month for me.
  • I learned what a quire is, and that the word is very closely related to “choir.”  This venture into British architecture was a direct result of watching snippets of the royal wedding this month and trying to figure out how the church was designed.  Although I don’t go for the tabloid obsession for British royals, the history of the British monarchy has always been so fascinating to me (Henry VII, Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, the royalty’s roll through World War II . . . all so interesting).
  • Avoid power struggles whenever possible.  Unfortunately, while I’m getting better at this as I age, I am not proficient at this skill yet.  Ugg.
  • The act of writing letters to kids in unfortunate circumstances makes me happy.
  • My new solution for the problem of my children not always remembering to brush their teeth before leaving for church on Sunday morning:  toothbrushes and toothpaste in the glove compartment of the car.
  • I learned that the older I get the more I enjoy using a thesaurus.  I think it helps that it can be done so easily on a computer.
