Vintage Series: Calling Grandma

Here I am, just slightly older than Peanut Maximus, calling my grandma on the phone. My grandma lived across the driveway on the same farm, and after I ate lunch, when my brother and cousin went down for their nap, I would use the rotary phone with its lovely long spiral cord and call my grandmother to ask if I could come over. She always said yes! (At least that’s the way I remember it!) I was not a very good napper, so spending “nap” with grandma was perfect. I would put on my coat and outerwear and head out across the driveway to her back door all by myself. It was a very big deal to go all by myself!
When I got to her house the afternoon would be filled with magical activities: sculpting clay, making instant pudding or cracker sandwiches with butter, paper dolls, recording things on the cassette recorder, playing radio station and playing with the huge calculator (the adding machine) in my grandpa’s office. Sometimes I even got to play with the typewriter! When I was older there was even a copy machine that absolutely entranced me! I could go on and on and list all the wonderful things we did in the afternoon.
