Visiting Grandma Kathy’s Haybales

Valley City was still flooded while we were visiting, which meant that there were dikes up in town, and that the road to Grandma Kathy’s house was flooded in both directions over bridges.  Grandma Kathy was camped out at a trailer house that she and Papa Richard own on some land that they keep horses on.  The trailer house is usually rented out, but it happened to be that it was empty at the time of the flood and was the perfect place for Grandma to stay while the water went down.  Right outside the trailer house was a collection of haybales for the horses in the nearby pasture.  Because lots of kids can get cooped up in a trailer house after a bit, the haybales provided hours of entertainment for kidlets clad in mudboots.  They climbed.  They leaped.  They rant.  They chased.  They came up with all sorts of pretend play scenarios for the haybales, including castles and pirate ships and all sorts of things.  They loved the haybales.
