Saturday Afternoon Math Activity

While Mr. Sneaky Pants and The Banana were napping yesterday, Sarah asked if we could do a math activity together. Luckily for her, I had been carrying this graphing idea around in my head for several days. Her teacher mentioned in a newsletter that she would like families to do some counting activities at home . . . counting objects around the house, counting letters in people’s names, ect. Right away I thought of having Sarah count the letters in extended family members’ names and make a 3-D graph out of legos. (How can you not love legos . . . not only are they creative, but they make such a nice multi-purpose manipulative). Anyway, it turned out that Sarah loved the activity SOOOOO much we had to do it three different times in a row. She loved thinking of people’s names to write down, making the lego towers, and comparing, measuring and analyzing which ones were bigger, smaller, and especially finding which names were the same size and could trade towers.

The winner of the family member with the longest name: Great Grandma Lolly! (She chose to write “Grandma so-and-so” rather than extended family members’ first and last names . . . we’ll probably try that another time!)
