A couple of years ago, my good friend gave me the idea of celebrating half birthdays in our home since we have a lot of birthdays that come extremely close to major holidays. I thought it was an interesting idea, and the more I thought about it, the better it seemed. Ms. Crazy Preschooler latched onto the idea very quickly. She has been more obsessed with the notion of turning four and a half and five and a half than her new age on her real birthday. The idea makes a lot of sense, not only for people who just have birthdays on major holidays. Birthdays are such an enormous event for kids, and it is so hard to wait an entire year to celebrate your very special day. We have never been the kind of family to celebrate even real birthdays with elaborate parties complete with a mob of small (probably sticky) children, even though my kids probably would enjoy that kind of a birthday. We are much more low key; birthdays are mainly a family affair. So, doing a few special things on half birthdays doesn’t seem over the top for me.

Tomorrow is the day! Ms. Crazy Preschooler will be five and a half. We’ve planned to open a few small presents, and at the grocery store today she picked out a special brownie mix with colored sprinkles that she’s been eying for weeks as we wisk through the bakery aisle with our overloaded shopping cart. She’ll get to pick out our food for lunch and breakfast, and she has plans to put on a fun puppet show with our puppet theater that hangs in a doorway. We’ll probably try our hand at some fun art projects, and enjoy the day.

I really like this idea! We’ve thrown it around our family, since we have 2 December birthdays, but have never put it in action. I think you may have just inspired me!
