Because we’ve settled into a relaxed schedule, I’m reading a lot of books and sleeping my fill. Ahhhh. That’s nice.
Have you been watching Mo Willems’ Lunch Doodles? We have been fans of Mo Willems for years and years, and The Banana and Mr. TOF wait with great anticipation for each new episode of Lunch Doodles. It’s so well done, even I get wrapped up into it. We’ve loved seeing the original drawings for some of our favorite books, and the doodling has been great too. Lunch Doodles is calm, peaceful, fun, quirky, and not at all condescending.
For part of “Mom School” I have been forcing The Banana, The Devious Snail, and Mr. TOF to gather at the dining room table each morning (OK . . . midmorning, because everyone loves to sleep in here) where I read some scriptures, three poems of the day and we practice freewriting. I have really been enjoying listening to the stories these kids have been writing during our free writing time. We have laughed so much. It’s so fun to see what different minds come up with for our daily writing prompt.
Also related, I’ve pulled out my Poetry 180 book and I’ve been reading one of these poems as one of the three poems of the day. They are great poems, and I’ve loved rediscovering them. I’m excited to be reading them to my teenagers. (One poem of the day is by a classic poet – last week it was Robert Frost, one poem of the day is geared toward elementary grades, and one poem of the day is geared toward teenagers).
I love that my geography map puzzles are getting used. Yay! A few weeks ago I looked at all the map puzzles and felt sad that I hadn’t gotten my kidlets to use them very much. Little did I know that we would all be home for weeks on end, and map puzzles make for a great educational activity.
A few weeks ago we got a new refrigerator. I’m loving it. It has double doors, a fridge on top, and a freezer below. It’s such a better set up for space for our family. It’s also bigger than the last fridge, and it’s nice to have a little more room. Plus, it works! Cold stuff is staying cold without getting frozen!
Dr. Peds didn’t like the vast white front of the fridge, so this week we covered it with magnetic poetry, and the literature being created in the kitchen has been hilarious.
I’m loving that the weather is warming up bit by bit. I think everyone else is loving it too. Everyone is getting outside, going for long walks since there is no place else to go and we have a Stay At Home order from our governor. The order specifically allows people to go outside and get exercise, though, and that is what people have been doing. Its nice to see everyone out and about, although sad that everyone seems a little afraid of everyone else because . . . germs.
Our Little Library on the corner has been getting a workout! Materials have been flying in and out of there like crazy since the public libraries are closed. It’s great to see so many people stop on the corner to take and leave books.
