The Kapla Aviary

Last week the big kidlets were home all week from school for spring break.  Since most of my piano students were not traveling, I maintained a mostly normal teaching schedule, and several of those students come to their lessons during “nap,’  when Mr. TOF is napping and the big kidlets are normally at school.  After lunch Banana was off to the office wearing headphones and listening to an audiobook while working on projects.  Mr. SP was huddled up with a good book in his room.  YaYa asked if she could be in the family room.  I said, “Sure!  But you have to build something really neat with the kapla blocks.”  YaYa is super talented with those kapla blocks.  She loves architecture, and I love seeing what creative designs she comes up with.

Two lessons later, I rounded the corner into the kitchen and saw my bird lover in the next room putting the finishing touches on an extremely complex aviary (the pictures do not do it justice at all).   I knew she would do something amazing as soon as she got started!  I loved how complicated it was.   I loved that it was an aviary.  I would have never thought to make an aviary, and there were so many neat angles and corners.

Often the big kids do not have the opportunity to build complicated block structures these days because a certain small someone loves to knock down whatever they are building before it is even a quarter completed, so it was really fun to see YaYa work on her aviary for an extended time while I was teaching.  SHE knocked it down after I took pictures of the final version because she wanted the pleasure of the tumbling crash for herself.
